Golden Labradors

Golden Labradors

Golden Labradors (probably more correctly referred to as Yellow) are quite possibly the most popular colour variant of the breed as a whole, compared to the other variations of Black, Chocolate and Silver labs. Experts claim that the yellow colour we know today first appeared way back in 1899. Variations of colour such as “Butterscotch”, “Liver” or “Golden” are reported as far back as 1807.

It was the UK Kennel Club that finally decreed that Golden Labradors were in fact technically not so purely and simply because Gold was not a colour (Don’t ask us!) However, it is true that since the mid 20th century breeding and labrador training practices have tended to favour ever more lighter shades of yellow.

However, to us and millions more like us our favourite companions will still be affectionately known as Golden Labradors. Whether your opinion resides in the Yellow camp or that of the Golden Labradors you will certainly have noticed that your “best friend” has many other very distinctive characteristics. His (or her) nose is likely to be black but as they notch up a few more years and get older the lack of a particular enzyme to control Melanin (a pigmentation) production can see that old nose turning a little pink. Cold weather can sometimes have the same effect as well, but it’s nothing to be alarmed about and quite natural. These pigmentation features can take various forms and can give rise to some striking colouring types. The famous “Dudley” colouring being just one of them. So, when is it best to train them?

Golden Labradors (sorry, Yellow, but I’m too old to change the habits of a lifetime!) are bred for the show ring and the field in equal numbers. Naturally the physical characteristics of each type will vary slightly. The typical show dog perhaps being a little heavier, more powerful and squarer of head. His brother bred for the field will be longer in the leg, lighter and with a longer muzzle.

However, whichever breed you choose the Yellow or Golden Labradors that share your life will be a joy. Remember, to get the most out of the training and early years, check our other pages for more info. Lab-Yellow_100x100.jpg
